Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas--Review

I've found a delightful author in Sarah J. Maas. (I know, where have I been?) This series is a best seller for a reason! I haven't been a fan of epic fantasy because it usually gets bogged down with details I don't enjoy. I like my books to be fast paced and chuck full of excitement, so when I had the chance to read Throne of Glass at a discounted price, I snapped it up. I had been looking for something exciting, and I wasn't disappointed. Ms. Mass is a master of words. I don't say this lightly. She weaves lines so exquisitely I can't help but be sucked into her prose.

The idea of a female assassin who was only eighteen and had endured so many hardships wasn't too appealing to me at first. I'd like to say I had real enthusiasm for this story going in, but I didn't. Celaena Sardothian swiftly stole my heart, and I was along for a glorious ride from that moment on. Celaena is likeable in most ways, yet flawed deeply. I like this about her character and was drawn to her imperfection and her sense of self. She'd been raised to be confident. She'd killed people for money, but what I saw in her was a young woman trying to make sense of a messed up world. I could relate, lol.

I won't go into details of the story. For that, you'll have to read the book. This is a no spoiler zone, so there :)

I've read the three available books in this trilogy and can't get enough. May 2015 won't come soon enough for this fan!

Vaempires: Revolution (The Evolutionary War-Book 1)Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000032_00024]
It is the morning of Princess Cassandra’s sixteenth birthday. Everyone’s attention is focused on the heir to the vampire throne. World leaders, the rich and famous, and VIPs from every corner of the globe have gathered in the nation’s capital to celebrate the momentous event.
Cassandra’s boyfriend, Daniel, is late for the party. He’s still outside the city when all hell breaks loose. What he believes is an act of terrorism proves to be a full-fledged revolution. Væmpires–former vampires who mutated into warm-blooded creatures with an insatiable hunger for cold blood–have launched coordinated attacks across the globe, with three goals: the eradication of humanity, the enslavement of vampires, and the ascension of væmpires as the dominant species on the planet.
The vampire and human leaders are killed. Cassandra is missing. Daniel is the acting king. Desperate to find the princess, Daniel and his friends fight their way across the besieged city. With the hopes of the free world resting on the shoulders of four vampire teenagers, væmpires unleash their secret weapons: a new breed of væmpire that is far deadlier than any ever seen before.
What can four teens do against an enemy that can shape-shift, fly, and walk through walls?

It’s almost Christmas. With the global holiday days away, the people of the world should be turning their attention toward celebrating peace and goodwill, but tension between humans, vampires, and væmpires is at an all-time high. Desperate for solutions, King Brant schedules a secret summit deep in North America’s Northern Forest. Along with Queen Anne, Princess Cassandra, Daniel’s family, and the human president and First Lady, the vampire leader seeks to reaffirm the ties between humans and vampires, while brainstorming ways to respond to the growing hostility among væmpires.
Meanwhile, Daniel and Cassie’s relationship is at an all-time low. The princess is still reeling from her breakup with Vielyn, and Daniel doesn’t know what he should or shouldn’t do to help. Little does he know that the summit will be flooded with surprises–guests, allegations, accusations, proposals, and even Christmas Eve revelations–but not all of the surprises will be pleasant.

If you like the fae, you're in for a treat. Stacey Marie Brown has a fantastic series, three books in, full of dark fae. In fact, her series is packed with mystery that will keep you turning the pages. At 99¢, it's a bargain!

Darkness of Light Teasers:
“I won’t deny I’m good at it, but it’s definitely not one of my many hidden talents. Or so I’ve been told.” His expression revealed nothing, but there was no doubt as to what he was hinting at. My cheeks turned a deep shade of pink and I quickly turned away from him. I didn’t miss the smirk cutting across his face.
“T-that’s not . . . I mean . . . I wasn’t insinuating . . .” It usually wasn’t easy to turn me into a stammering mess, but he seemed to do it effortlessly.
“What’s wrong, Ember?” A cruel, smug smile tugged at the corner of Eli’s mouth. “You don’t strike me as the type who gets thwarted so easily.” Eli’s bright eyes penetrated so deeply into mine it made me feel as if all my inner thoughts and feelings were being unveiled.
“Thwart suggests you defeated or outwitted me.” My eyebrows arched in a mocking response, challenging him. A slow, unsettling grin spread over his face, but he stayed silent. “What’s wrong Eli? You don’t strike me as the type who gets surmounted so easily.”
You want to play vocabulary? Fine, bring it, I thought.
His eyebrow cocked, and I immediately wanted to slap myself. Oh, you idiot. Why did you have to use that word?
“It’s a little early in our relationship for us to be ‘surmounting,’ but, hey, I’m game if you are. I’ll even let you be on top.” He looked directly at me, a coy smile playing on his lips.
Whenever I thought I had the upper hand, Eli seemed to be able to pull my legs out from under me, knocking me off my game. I grappled for any kind of thought not including images of this boy’s naked body or his fingers against my bare skin. I shook my head, trying to rid my mind of the vivid images playing out in my head.
He moved in closer, causing warmth to flare through me as he brushed my arm. He leaned down and whispered in my ear, his hot breath slipping teasingly down my neck and spine. “I’ll be waiting eagerly for a good retort from that wicked tongue of yours. I’m sure you will come back with some mind-blowing licks for me.” He stepped back away from me. Watching me flounder for words and the chagrin spreading over my cheeks only widened his smile.
*****
His fingers touched my jaw and slithered down, softly tracing the contours of my neck and the scrapes until he reached the top of my tank top. My eyes closed as I drowned in the pleasure of his touch. His other thumb swept gingerly across my bottom lip. My lips parted, catching his thumb in my mouth, and sucked on it. A soft moan came from his throat, making the yearning burn deeper in my body. My eyes fluttered open to see him staring down at me. For a brief time we stayed like that, lost in everything we had left unsaid. Urgently, he slid his hands to the back of my neck, cupping my face. He concentrated intently on my lips as he lowered his slowly to mine, which ached for his touch.
A burst of electric shocks rippled through my body, sparking an intense passion that completely overtook me. There was nothing in the world I wanted more. Every touch was like fire, the taste of his lips spurred a divine hunger, a craving that was an insatiable, endless need for him.

Darkness of Light (Book 1)

Freak. Witch. Crazy. Schizo.

Ember Brycin has been called them all. She’s always known she’s different. No one has ever called her normal, even under the best circumstances. Bizarre and inexplicable things continually happen to her, and having two different colored eyes, strange hair, and an unusual tattoo only contributes to the gossip about her.

When the latest school explosion lands her in a facility for trouble teens, she meets Eli Dragen, who’s hot as hell and darkly mysterious. Their connection is full of passion, danger, and secrets. Secrets that will not only change her life, but what and who she is—leading her down a path she never imagined possible.

Between Light and Dark, Ember finds a world where truth and knowledge are power and no one can be trusted. But her survival depends on finding out the truth about herself. In her pursuit, she is forced between love and destiny and good and evil, even when the differences between them aren’t always clear. At worst, she will incite a war that could destroy both worlds. At best, she will not only lose her heart but her life and everyone she loves. Once the truth is out, however, there will be no going back. And she’ll definitely wish she could.

Fire in the Darkness (Book 2)

It's been four weeks since Ember Brycin witnessed what her powers are capable of. The Electrical Current Storm (ECS) has turned Seattle, Washington into a natural disaster zone. The death toll is in the thousands with countless others homeless and hungry.

And Ember is the one who caused it. Something she will have to live with every day.

Those people who were unable to escape either turned quickly into gangs or live in shelters. Ember, on the other hand, can’t do either. With a price on her head and a Dark Dweller on her ass, she is constantly on the move. Both Light and Dark are hunting her for their own purpose to use her as a weapon or a pawn in the war between the Unseelie King of the Dark and the Seelie Queen of the Light.

Em needs help but doesn’t know who to trust: Lars, the mystery man Torin told her to find? Torin, the Seelie Queen’s personal knight, who has sworn to keep Em safe? Or Eli, who wants to turn her over to the Unseelie King, but whom she has an undeniable, intense connection with?

No matter what she chooses she will probably lose—her life or everything and everyone she loves.

Beast in the Darkness (Eli Novellette)

*Meant to be read after Fire In The Darkness*

Beast In The Darkness (An Elighan Dragen Novelette)

We know the story from Ember's POV, but what happens to Eli after Ember disappears? Crawl inside Eli's mind and experience what he goes through. Be warned his mind in not a fuzzy warm place to be....

**Warning this contains sexual content and language.
**Contains Spoilers if you have not previously read Darkness Of Light or Fire In The Darkness.

Dwellers of Darkness (Book 3)

Some days feel like years, but in Ember Brycin’s case just the opposite is true. She had only been in the Otherworld for a day or two when she escaped with her mom, Kennedy, and Jared to the Earth realm. But it’s three years later on Earth. Em would be 22 now—if she was a human. But she’s not. She is a Dae—part Demon and part Fay—with a little Dark Dweller thrown in to make her even more of a freak.

One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is her undeniable connection to Eli Dragen, who is sexy, gorgeous, and even more frustrating. But her problems go way past him.

The Seelie Queen of the Otherworld still holds Mark, Em’s father, and her friends, Ryan, and Josh as hostages. Em needs to rescue them without, once again, getting caught and being used as a pawn to help the Queen regain possession of Earth. At the same time Lars, the Unseelie King, reminds Em she is bound to him and has to locate the Sword of Light to fulfill the prophesy and kill the Queen.

As the tension for war mounts between the Seelie and Unseelie (Light and Dark), the tension at the Dark Dweller’s compound mounts even more as they prepare to obtain the sword no matter what the price. But is Ember the answer to the location of the sword? Is she the one to fulfill the prophecy? As usual nothing is ever what it seems.

Excerpt in Skye's POV:

Manda grasped my arm tightly; breaking off my confession as she motioned with a slight tip of her head to something behind me. I slowly turned to see a contingent of ten soldiers coming out of a covered walkway and making their way across the bailey towards us. My heart quickened at the sight of the men with their stern faces as they marched towards us.
The two soldiers closest to us stepped aside, and after a moment, the head of a tall, older man was visible through the bodies of soldiers. Manda released her grip on my arm and immediately sank into a deep curtsy. Jerking my gaze from her bent head to the man walking towards us, I made one quick conclusion.
He was the King. McClintock.
I stood my ground and scrutinized every move he made as he leisurely walked our way. It wasn’t until I saw him striding my way that I realized how much I’d pictured him to look like King Henry VIII in my mind. But this was no hefty King Henry coming my way.
His hair was the same dirty blond as Nickoli’s. However where Nickoli’s was trimmed short, McClintock’s was long; skimming his shoulders. His jaw line was covered with a blond beard streaked lightly with gray. But his most striking feature was his height and build. He was as tall, if not taller than Nickoli, with broad shoulders and a long stride. When he rounded the corner of men he slowed and his eyes connected with mine. From the roughly thirty feet separating us I couldn’t see his expression very well, but body language told the story. I saw him tense and straighten up before beginning to walk forward again.
He was dressed all in black; his legs ensconced in tall black boots and fitted pants, and a leather coat hung to his knees. The material was embroidered with a black-on-black swirling pattern, but the piece de resistance was the long, flowing cape trimmed in black fur.
“You are your mother’s daughter,” he spoke, his voice a deep, rich baritone as he came within an arm’s length of where I stood. His words were unexpected, and I checked the impulse to flinch as the men on both sides of him fanned out to form a human wall blocking the sight of our interaction from anyone in the inner ward. Beside me Manda rose from her curtsy, but still kept her head lowered. Curious behavior for someone whom he supposedly considered family.
“I beg your pardon?” I managed in my most haughty voice. “Did you know my mother?”
“Well of course. She was very, very dear to me, and you are an amazing image of her when she was about your age,” he informed me, and raised his arms out wide. “Welcome home, Princess.”
