Book Review--Into the Spiral by Erin Danzer

Into the Spiral (Spiral Defenders #1)Into the Spiral by Erin Danzer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Into the Spiral was a great start to a new series by Erin Danzer. Ronnie (Veronica) the MC was a typical fifteen year old (At least what I remember being like when I was fifteen).

Ronnie can't seem to make up her mind where boys are concerned and she's a little flighty. Quite often when I read books with a protagonist this young, they feel too old.

It's refreshing to see a character that is just a fun teenager looking to get her first kiss, have a boyfriend and enjoy life.

I have a feeling as this series progresses, Ronnie will have to face many difficult challenges, not the least of which is the secretive Rick, who is way too old for our heroine and a bit creepy with her. His motivations are unclear at this point, but something sinister is there.

Gavin is a great male lead who pushes Ronnie's buttons. They have a fun dynamic that makes their interactions feel real.

The support cast of Andi and Shawn was good. Although I liked these characters, Shawn's reaction to Ronnie didn't hit home for me, yet is realistic for his age. I don't want to give spoilers, but this was the only area that I really didn't like and it wasn't that big of a deal.

The idea of the spiral defenders is awesome and I can't wait to see how Ms. Danzer incorporates other worlds and creatures into the series. The imagination and descriptions were vivid and kept me reading.

If you like fun, quick reads with realistic characters that need some growing up, this might be your book. I for one am looking forward to the sequel!
