The Struggle of an Empath

Supernatural empathy isn’t a gift, it’s a curse. Anywhere she goes, Jade’s emotions are replaced by those of the people around her.
Jade grew up in a suburb of Colorado Springs, protected from other people by her parents. Now she faces college—and the world—with nothing to shield her from unwanted feelings.
When Cam, a classmate with a major crush on her unintentionally hijacks her emotions, Jade struggles to keep from being carried away in feelings of attraction. When Ethan, a psychopath with a thirst for fear, fixates on her, the emotional impact could be lethal.
Caught in a deadly trap, Jade must untangle the emotions and find a way to use her empathic curse to overcome this killer or be overcome by him.

My Review:

Empath (The Flawed Series, #1)Empath by Becca J. Campbell
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I was given a copy of the ARC for an honest review.

Empath was not what I expected going in. The paranormal elements are very light in the story yet play a major role in the overall plot.

This book read mostly like a contemporary thriller with a few paranormal elements sprinkled in. Jade has empathic abilities that debilitate her. She takes on the emotions of those around her, which makes socializing very hard.

Imagine being in a crowded room and being bombarded with the varying emotions of those around you. Essentially, Jade doesn't know who she is when this story starts. She's been extremely sheltered and her spunk waxes and wanes throughout the story. I admired her desire to overcome her affliction, but I would have liked her try to accept it much sooner in the novel.

There were other characters who had paranormal abilities that all collide in a smallish city in Colorado.

I really like Becca J. Campbell's writing style and I did enjoy the book. The problems I had with it are mostly related to being in the head of a serial killer. I did not like reading scenes from the killer's point of view. He too has paranormal abilities, yet is disabled. He uses his seeming disability to lure in beautiful brunettes to torture and kill.

There was a bit of a hand of god flow to the story, but I think that was the intent. These people are brought together for a purpose. I would have liked to have seen more of a direction from the characters rather than the divine, but the story did work well.

If you like thrillers with a super creepy villain and an overcoming the odds tale, this book might be for you.

Thanks to Becca Campbell for the opportunity to read and review Empath. It was an enjoyable read and it will be interesting to see how the series progresses.

  2. I agree, Emma. If I liked being in the head of a killer, I'm sure I would have loved the story. Those who really like thrillers, I think would really enjoy this because of the real world feel to it.

    Thanks for commenting :)
